Having taken over the family trading business, which was established by his father,1904, GMH, as he was popularly known, went to into Agriculture, establishing tea and coffee plantations in the highlands of Western Equatoria, starting in 1932. Over a decade later, he introduced tobacco cultivation and expanded the family business into manufacturing, gold mining, trading and transport.
Long before the term Corporate Social Responsibility was coined, GMH was much involved in providing a helping hand to the local farmers, their families, Communities and the Region.
Five decades later, it was decided that the social responsibility and philanthropy should become institutionalized. This gave the birth to Haggar Foundation.
